Hearken, for lo the Goracle Speaketh!

Commenting on Al Gore's "Keep the Faith" article about AGW (anthropogenic global warming) in The New York Times this past weekend, John McCormack of The Weekly Standard notes Gore's sentence: "From the standpoint of governance, what is at stake is our ability to use the rule of law as an instrument of human redemption." McCormack then comments:
"This has to be one of the most egomaniacal sentences ever written. Gore's editorial, of course, was on the topic of global warming/climate change. He urged lawmakers to pass the unpopular cap & trade legislation as part of his effort to save the world from humanity and humanity from itself. Judging by his op-ed, Gore sees himself as a prophet who will guide Congress and America to the promised land. Thus, he sees "the rule of law as an instrument of human redemption."If the American left wants to know why there is such deep skepticism about dire "climate change" predictions, it is because of sentences such as this. Coupled with the mounting evidence that the scientists who have pushed the climate change agenda are not been pure empiricists, the movement's eschatology is reminiscent of a cult, with Al Gore as its savior."
Johah Goldberg also calls attention to this sentence in a brief post entitled "Immanentize the Eschaton Watch." Donna Laframboise isn't buying what Gore is selling. She answers his ad hominem attacks on his critics with some ad hominem right back at you in a post entitled: "Al Gore Blows Tobacco Smoke in Our Face - Again."

Criticizing Al Gore is boring because it is like shooting fish in a barrel. But as long as the masses hang on his every utterance and legislators take him seriously, the dirty job must be done. It seems hard to believe but for many the chant is still: "There is no god but Obama and Gore is his prophet."

It really is nearly enough to make you call for the separation of church and state, or at least of liberal utopian religion and government.

Peter,
I guess if the note turns out to be authentic we will just have to chalk this up as typical cult behavior. AGW true believers are not only deluded; they are also dangerous.

It is funny that liberals are usually guilty of every vice and evil that they attribute to conservatives. Can you imagine if this happened because of fears that conservatives aroused over some issue or other? It would be the final refutation of all things conservative in the minds of the Olbermans of the world.

I agree. I remember the Jonestown incident as a child but only learned last year that Jim Jones was a radical leftist--somehow the media didn't think that was important. Also, the media has insinuated that the guy who flew his plane into the IRS building is connected somehow with the Tea Party movement, even though he too was a crazy left winger. So even when it is a left winger who goes off the deep end, they manage to blame conservatives for it.

Attributing vices your own side has to the opposition is actually in the strategy of people like Saul Alinski, and it goes right back to Marx. It allows them to distract people from their craziness, and it's easy when the media report just what they're told.
