A student in a graduate program in counseling at Eastern Michigan University has been expelled for refusing to affirm homosexual behaviour as morally right.
Julea Ward consulted her supervisor as to whether to have her client see another counsellor and handled the situation professionally. However, she was dismissed from the program specifically because of her beliefs. A story in the campus newpaper reports:
"A dismissal letter from the university said Ward was removed for violating two provisions in the American Counseling Association’s code of ethics, which are found in the counseling program’s handbook. The two provisions state that a student should not impose values “inconsistent with counseling goals” and should refrain from discriminating people [sic] based on culture and sexual orientation.
Ward’s lawyers said in the complaint that EMU’s actions violated the student’s constitutional rights, because she was apparently being forced to change her beliefs and affirm homosexuality.
"When a public university has a prerequisite of affirming homosexual behavior as morally good in order to obtain a degree, the school is stepping over the legal line,” ADF Senior Counsel David French said in a statement.""
The University said (without the slightest trace of irony - my bolding):
"In response to questions about the lawsuit, EMU issued this statement: “Although Eastern Michigan University does not comment on pending litigation, we are a diverse campus with a strong commitment not to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.”
Make that "some religions" rather than "religion." Apparently, there can be no accommodation of people with different religious views at Eastern Michigan. It is a matter of expelling the unclean and upholding the religious views of those in power. Liberal fascism is still fascism.
